Back in a few…

Posted by Eric Ebbinghaus on November 5, 2009

Here’s the deal:

We made it to Greeley no problem.

We’re in the process of settling and unpacking.

We enjoyed time at the Barn Bash with the youth tonight.

We get our Internet hooked up here on Friday so more constant posts should be easier.

I start at the church officially this coming Monday!

That’s the general rundown. Short and sweet, but this post is coming from my phone!

My buddy Chris posted this video to Facebook last night and I thought it was too good not to share.

WE MADE IT!

Posted by Eric Ebbinghaus on October 11, 2009

Thanks everyone for the support we asked for in getting home safely. The roads were mighty treacherous when we left Goodland, KS this morning, but it didn’t take long before they were wet, then dry altogether.

Our mission yesterday was to get the first leg of the trip (about 250+ miles) knocked out after leaving midday from Greeley and make our second day of travel easier. Well when we woke up this morning things were pretty bleak with a sheet of ice covering EVERYTHING and West bound I-70 closed, with the East bound side looking like an ice skating rink.

We decided it best to wait it out, and when we finally saw the salt trucks out we loaded the car and took off. Immediately upon getting in the car, Brandi asked, “Are we going to have to drive like 10 hours today?” LOL, I don’t know where she was yesterday when I was explaining the trip to her, but it made the day start off with a bit of frustration since we wanted to leave earlier. Fortunately though, even though we left a few hours later, our journey was safe and as always, the trek across Kansas was boring. No offense to Kansas, but I’m going to choose to fly from now on. :)

Also, a quick update on where we are status-wise. We were able to find a nice condo/townhome WITH a 2 car garage and even a separate laundry room in our price range not far from the church. It will be available to us to move in on November 1 so that’s the day we’re going to shoot for to get into and settled in G-Town, with me starting at the church a week after that. Wish we had some pictures from our adventure this past week, but unfortunately we are AWFUL at remembering to take pictures even after we remembered to pack the camera.

If you’re interested in checking out the church we’re headed to, you can visit http://greeleywes.org. Also, for those of you who have no idea where Greeley is in reference to the rest of the state of Colorado, here’s a look at it:

The Holidome

Posted by Eric Ebbinghaus on October 10, 2009

You know the kind of people who ALWAYS refer to a place as it used to be called? For instance, KFC isn’t Kentucky Fried Chicken anymore, it’s just KFC. BUT, most folks who have fond memories, or any memories at all I suppose still call it good old Kentucky Fried. OR, if a business closed, and the building was bought or leased by another company, they still refer to it as, “it’s where the old A&W was,” OR, “the old Hardee’s building.” They never quite seem to catch up with what it is now. Well, tonight’s funny example comes from my dear old dad (not so old yet, but you know how the adage goes).

Remember the old Holiday Inn Holidomes? They were those roadside mega-hotels for road warrior, cross country vacationing style families that rivaled a water park or Pauly Shore’s “Biodome.” It was like a YMCA surrounded by hotel rooms. If you don’t remember them, you can stop reading, but I sure do remember them. Or the remnants of the Holidomes left over that were built in the 70’s. My favorite part, of this point is, when Dad remembers one thing as something in particular, that’s ALWAYS what it is. This isn’t a smear on my Dad’s reputation. He quite literally has one of the best memories of anyone you will ever meet. If he encountered it directly, he will NEVER forget it.

WHAT WAS…

IS NOW…

When I told him we’d be cutting our return trip into two stages, and that I was trying to think of the best place along our route to stop off, preferably with a pool for Ruthi (you’ll see evidence of this below), He repeatedly told me “I’m pretty sure there’s a Holidome in Goodland.” And he’s right. Our family stayed at that exact place on two different cross country trips, one in the summer of 1986 and the other in the summer of 1991. What’s funny is even after I told him that I booked the Holiday Inn Express in Goodland, he again replied with, “That might be a Holidome.” I told him I didn’t know if it would have lasted quite that long, but it JUST GOES TO SHOW HOW WELL A GOOD BRAND STICKS IN OUR HEAD!

When we arrived, it was evident that the old Holidome had since been eliminated, but was replaced with an outstanding new and clean Holiday Inn Express. I just wonder when I get down the road a bit, and Holiday Inn Expresses are replaced with Holiday Inn Space Town, how long I’ll continue to refer to them as a Holiday Inn Express. Here’s to you Dad!

Why are we in Colorado?

Posted by Eric Ebbinghaus on October 6, 2009

It’s a long story. A really long story, that ties into my extended post from 2 weeks ago. The point is, that when I decided to take a “break” I didn’t know what to entail, I was just prepared to be obedient.

Remember the commercials with the pan, and the egg? “This is your brain… this is your brain on drugs.” Well, “this is me… and this is me being obedient.”

We are totally psyched to announce that on Friday Pastor Steve Wilson from Greeley Wesleyan in Greeley, CO (duh) offered me the position of youth pastor, and on Sunday, we accepted. Not being ones to waste any time, we did our laundry, serviced and cleaned up the car, and left for Greeley at 4am CST this morning.

So, were here. Dinner tonight with Pastor Steve and youth leaders, then looking for housing the rest of the week. We also get to sit in and visit youth tomorrow night to try and get the ball rolling. We’re looking at a move date of the end of October/early November. What’s available housing-wise will determine the speed of our transition.

Thanks for all your prayers and support over the past several months. It’s been a rocky and challenging time as well as an amazing learning experience. I am BEYOND PUMPED to get back in the swing and do what I do, baby!

BTW, we spent the last 2.5 hours of our trip drooling over the Rockies on this beautiful and clear day. I LOVE ME SOME COLORADO!

Experiencing a Delay…

Posted by Eric Ebbinghaus on October 5, 2009

Holy smokes! No posts in 2 weeks. What is this world coming to? Well, don’t sweat it. I’ve got some big news on the way. You’ll just have to wait just a BIT longer to hear it. A lot of you reading this probably already know, but I’m waiting anyway.

I’ll give you a hint… I’m not going to be unemployed for much longer!

Mr. Invincible

Posted by Eric Ebbinghaus on September 20, 2009

Sickness is sobering, isn’t it? I think this for a few reasons, and before I begin, I want you to know that I’m getting philosophical and NOT looking for sympathy. This go around has just made me think a little bit. When you’re sick enough that you need to stay laid up in bed just to feel an ounce of your humanity, it shakes you a little bit. It reminds me that I’m just not quite invincible as I still think I am.

Do you guys know what I’m talking about? Maybe the ladies don’t deal with this as much as the guys do, but I can remember a time (errr…. including right now:)) where I knew I couldn’t be beat. I don’t just mean in the sports or academic sense, but more along the lines of health and success. I can remember doing ridiculous things like burnouts in my truck, jumping off roofs, swimming upstream at Charrette Creek during flood stage (incidentally finding myself frighteningly near to the Missouri river, and having BB gun fights at dangerously close ranges. Mom & Dad if you didn’t know half of these things, just pretend like they never happened. Read the rest of this entry »

Here I am…

Posted by Eric Ebbinghaus on September 14, 2009

Don’t really know where to start all this off. I’m a procrastinator by nature, obviously, but this I’ve been putting off intentionally for two weeks hoping to become inspired, sit down and share a stirring testimony of how I’ve jumped full force into my next steps and am dominating a new/temporary career.

Well… I haven’t, I’m not, and I’m not exactly sure what the future looks like. The first week of July, Brandi and I sat down and had a major heart-to-heart confessional/directional style conversation. It’s a “what do we see ourselves doing next” type thing. In the middle of June, I would probably have told you that I was undoubtedly headed to Colorado to work with the youth and the fine people at Greeley Wesleyan Church. Obviously, that didn’t happen, thanks to the discernment from Pastor Steve and us being reminded that we aren’t always the ones in control, I stepped away a little confused but still positive.

Through this whole process, we were preparing for our good friend Pastor Ryan to move on from Warrenton and head to Sandy Lake Wesleyan Church in Wisconsin. After our trip to Greeley, it was as if my drive to seek out other opportunities wavered and weakened almost immediately. Not totally understanding why, I committed my thoughts to prayer, and was startled by the peace I had in 1 particular thought… It was time for a break. Not just a vacation, or an extended weekend somewhere far away, but a complete step aside from full-time ministry for a season.

This feeling was confirmed when I shared my thoughts with Brandi that night in early July. The best way I could describe her reaction is one of relief and speechlessness. She said that I essentially presented to her something that she had wanted to bring up to me but maybe just didn’t have the words to do. I should take and make a little side note here to say that this is easily one of the top 2 or 3 difficult decisions I’ve ever had to make. It was not entered into lightly, nor was it something I wanted to do, it was just evident that it is the right thing to do. Read the rest of this entry »

Hold On

Posted by Eric Ebbinghaus on August 26, 2009

Many of you have been asking (harassing) me about where we’re going next and what we’re doing. It’s not something I can describe or explain in a short post, and I don’t have time for a long one right now, so this is just a dot dot dot (…) telling you to “HOLD ON.” I’m swamped trying to pack my office, teach ins and outs, and finish strong where I am. When I finish and I get a chance to catch my breath, I’ll be sure to post a story/thoughtful page about what’s going on in my (our) live[s]. It’s been a wild ride, and I’ve got some catching up to do.
